The Leading Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Position.

On the surface, this work could seem closer to a difficult scholarly challenge rather than a new pop project from a musician whose last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Divided across 4 different sections and performed in thirteen languages, we have a dizzying symphonic opus investigating female mystery, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, often through the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with raw openness elsewhere—soars skyward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself makes the work of contemporary artists appear rather modest.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That this album manages to transcend overly academic posturing is nearly miraculous, with sole credit belonging to Rosalía. While this is not her first album to blend historical sounds with modern styles, its stakes are far greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk more precarious. The element that truly raises her fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Much like the iconic artist during her peak, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. When she's tearing hearts apart, the listener still desire to be right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant energy shines clearly on the stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a declaration before a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in like cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the wild single featuring racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you rarely quite know—or even wish to know—what you is going to next."

Nearly each song concludes at a totally distinct point than where it started. A track explores the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate symphony before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing her previous rhythmic style begins off dark and sinister, featuring menacing beats, until sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Bridge Of Art and Pop

A key achievement on Lux is straddling the line between radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is no surprise that it has become her first release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks while it spins upward. That feat is echoed on another powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand level, an ambitious grasp for high artistry amid of looming artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant source of hidden treasure that requires time to completely explore but never seem like a chore. While other major pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly creative practitioner.
